Fr Joe Maguire SMA
The Irish Province of the Society of African Missions [SMA] is mourning today the death of its most senior priest, Fr Joe Maguire. Fr Joe passed away peacefully shortly before 10am on Monday, 21 November 2016, in St Theresa’s Nursing unit at the SMA House, Blackrock Road, Cork. It was the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lady and, for a man who spent so many hours each day in the community chapel, it was a fitting day to ‘return to the Lord’. Fr Joe was 94 years of age.
Father Joe’s remains are resting the community chapel in the SMA House, Blackrock Road until 5pm on Tuesday, 22 November. After Prayers for the Dead his remains will be removed at 5.30pm to St Joseph’s SMA Parish Church, Wilton, Cork.
Requiem Mass at 12 noon on Wednesday followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery
Joe, one of seven children, was born in Warren Street, South Circular Road, Dublin. He is survived by his last remaining sister, Mrs Sheila Barnwall. His other five siblings – Sr. Michael OSF, Chris, Jimmy, Micheál and Kevin predeceased him.
Fr Joe is deeply regretted by his sister, sisters-in-law, Joyce Maguire and Jo Somerville, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, friends, SMA Confreres and the people of the Archdiocese of Jos, Nigeria.
