He is Risen

Birds sang their boisterous and uninhibited praises

as distant street lights shimmered

with excited anticipation.

Sister moon

who kept vigil during our sleep

prepared to bow below a western horizon

of royal blue.

To the east

where earth and sky meet

a soft azure canvass was glowing gold

in great expectation.

From Shaunie’s New Testament –

the one he used to study for his O’Level exam in 1971 –

five years before his untimely death,

I read:

“Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here; he has risen.” (Luke 24:5)

As I read the Gospel accounts of Christ’s Resurrection

Brother Sun burst forth upon the earth

dispelling the darkness and banishing despair.

My heart sang its own song of praise with nature.

Christ is risen on the Star of Life.

Death is no more.

Thank you God for this holy morning

of eternal hope and great joy.
