EARTH WEEK 2017: Mercy2Earth Weekend 22-23 April 2017

EARTH WEEK 2017

“When it comes to the care of our common home, we are living at a critical moment of history.”

– Pope Francis

This week is Earth Week and Saturday, 22 April 2017 is Earth Day.

Following is a letter sent by the SMA Thumbprint Campaign for Climate Justice to the many schools throughout Ireland that have taken the SMA Thumbprint Pledge:

Dear Teacher,

Your school and pupils have been pioneers in supporting the SMA Thumbprint Campaign for Climate Justice and we wish to express our appreciation to all who have taken the Thumbprint Pledge.

That pledge is a commitment to making good choices in all that we do towards caring for the health of the Earth and the wellbeing of all life upon it.

As a follow-up to our visit to your school, I am writing on behalf of the SMA Thumbprint Campaign to inform you about Earth Day on Saturday April 22nd, and to invite you and your students to participate in the Mercy2Earth weekend (22-23 April).

We invite you to look at the following link ‘Mercy2Earth.org’ within which you will be taken to a map of the world together with a growing list of events and Acts of Mercy ideas that are being planned across the globe to celebrate Earth Day and the Mercy2Earth Weekend:

We ask you to consider working with your students to register an idea from your Thumbprint Pledge as your contribution to this important celebration of the Earth. Your participation will also ensure that Ireland is increasingly seen as a country whose young people are determined to make a difference.

For further ideas on the SMA Thumbprint Campaign for Climate Justice we invite you to visit our website byt clicking here:

Next year the Church in Ireland is hoping that Pope Francis will attend the World Meeting of Families 2018, and we hope that all the schools and pupils who have joined our Thumbprint Campaign for Climate Justice will leave him in no doubt that Ireland’s youth are determined to work for a more compassionate and caring world.

Yours sincerely,

Dympna Mallon
SMA Laity Coordinator
