Rt Rev Msgr Michael B McPartland SMA

The Society of African Missions is mourning the death, on the evening of 6th April 2017, of the emeritus Prefect Apostolic of the Falkland Islands, the Right Reverend Monsignor Michael Bernard McPartland, SMA.

Born in Middlesbrough, England, on 29 September 1939, the young Michael McPartland had a varied life, leaving school at 15 years of age. He worked as a salesman, 11  years in the British Army and some time with British Rail.

In 1973, aged 34, he responded to a call to be a missionary priest and joined the SMA. Fr Michael was ordained a priest in the British Province of the Society of African Missions in 1978. He served as a missionary in Nigeria and Kenya. He also served as Superior of the British Province.

On 9 August 2002 he was appointed as Prefect Apostolic of the Falkland Islands. This also included responsibility also for St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.

His resignation, submitted following his 75th birthday, was accepted on 26 October 2016. On returning to England, Monsignor McPartland suffered some ill health which limited his ability to get around. He died last Thursday night following the latest in a series of strokes he suffered since returning to England.

SMAs from throughout the Society will mourn his death. He was a most gracious host and was always pleasant company. May his soul now rest in peace.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
