Father Edward [Ned] Casey, SMA
Members of the Society of African Missions are mourning the death of Fr Edward [Ned] Casey who died at the SMA House, Blackrock Road, Cork.
Fr Casey ministered in Nigeria for 28 years, of which 19 were spent in Ondo diocese. He was appointed as SMA Regional Superior in Nigeria South for nine years, followed by election to the Irish Provincial Council [1978 – 1983]. He also served as Superior of the SMA Houses in Blackrock Road, Cork and Wellington Road, Dublin. He also ministered in the diocese of Galway from 2001 – 2010 after which he served for five years as Chaplain to St Columba’s Nursing Home, Kilcolgan, Co Galway. Due to ill health he retired to the SMA House, Blackrock Road, Cork in 2015 where he died at 11am on Wednesday, 15 February 2017.
His Funeral Mass will take place at St Joseph’s SMA Church, Wilton, Cork at 12 noon on Saturday, 18 February. Click here to follow the Mass via webcam.
Thursday, 16 February: Reposing at the SMA House, Blackrock Road, Cork.
Friday, 17 February: Following Prayers for the Dead at 7pm his remains will be taken to St Joseph’s SMA Church, Wilton, Cork.
Saturday, 18 February: Concelebrated Funeral Mass at 12 noon followed by burial in the adjacent SMA community cemetery.
He is mourned by his sister Margaret Hanbury, nephews, nieces, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, their families, relatives, friends, SMA confreres and the people in the many places he ministered during his 64 years of priesthood, in Nigeria and Ireland. Fr Casey was predeceased by his sister Peggy Foley and brothers Thomas, John Joe and Patrick.
